Green Building Security
As properties “go green” to stay abreast of increasing public interest in environmental sustainability and responsibility, security companies are also forced to rethink the way in which they render their services.

Going green often means more open spaces to provide natural light and free airflow internally and more trees and shrubbery in external areas and parking lots to minimise the urban heat island effect. In addition to this, lighting at night time may be reduced to save energy and reduce light pollution.

From a security point of view these arrangements could be perceived as creating security risks as more accessible entry points are created, the line of sight of external surveillance and alarm systems such as cameras and beams is compromised, and guarding efficiency is compromised due to the same reasons.

It is therefore of utmost importance that security expertise is involved right from the beginning whenever a green building is planned. Unfortunately this will not always be the case, however, and security companies will have to be inventive and demonstrate a sound understanding and expertise to develop a security plan for a green building. Facilities managers will be more and more inclined to take this expertise into account whenever selecting a security company to plan and execute security services at green buildings.

iMvula Quality Protection is such a security company. As part of our value added services we have developed the systems and methodologies necessary to provide intelligent security solutions based on sound risk management principles for green buildings.

Apart from the design and implementation of integrated technological and manpower security solutions, iMvula Quality Protection has the resources and ability to monitor and expedite corrective and preventive actions unique to sustaining the internal and external environments at green buildings.

These services would typically include monitoring of moisture control, contaminant control, occupant comfort (including lighting, thermal comfort and ventilation), air pollutant control and general environmental quality monitoring.
